How to Get a Transcript of a YouTube Video
Use YouTube's built-in transcript when you only need to read, or turn a public link into searchable, editable TXT, SRT, or VTT when you need a reusable result.
This guide separates YouTube's official viewing method from CueSift's public-link workflow. CueSift does not bypass restricted videos, and its speech-transcription result should be reviewed as a draft.
Choose the right transcript route
Start from the result you need, not from a tool name.
Read and jump through the video
The video has captions and you only need to read.
Use YouTube's Show transcript panel and select a line to jump to that moment.
Copy clean continuous text
You need notes, research text, or content you can edit.
Create the transcript in CueSift, review it, then copy or export TXT.
Download timed subtitles
You need a reusable file for an editor or player.
Export SRT for broad compatibility or VTT for web caption workflows.
No transcript is available
The CC control or Show transcript option is absent or unusable.
Check captions, access, processing, and whether eligible public audio can be transcribed.
Choose TXT, SRT, or VTT
The best format depends on what you will do after getting the transcript. Do not remove timing information when you still need to match text to video playback.
| Format | Best for | Keeps timing |
|---|---|---|
| TXT | Notes, research, articles, and plain-text search | Optional |
| SRT | Video editors and broadly supported timed subtitles | Yes |
| VTT | Web players and browser caption workflows | Yes |
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming every video has a transcript
YouTube's full transcript view depends on captions being available for that video.
Treating visible text as a caption track
Text burned into the picture cannot be retrieved as a normal caption track and needs a separate OCR workflow.
Publishing an unreviewed draft
Names, numbers, accents, overlapping speakers, and noisy audio can produce transcription errors.
Trying to bypass restricted access
Use only sources you can access and process lawfully. CueSift does not bypass private or members-only controls.
Ready to create a reusable transcript?
Paste a public YouTube link, review the available source, search and edit the result, then export the format you need.
