First check whether the video has a usable caption track and is publicly accessible. Missing captions, a different caption language, access restrictions, live processing, or an unavailable video can all remove the transcript path. The creator can add captions. A viewer can use speech transcription only when the public audio is accessible and suitable for processing.

The video has an access restriction
The video is private, members-only, age-restricted, region-restricted, or requires an account with specific access.

The video is live or still processing
A new upload or live stream plays, but its final caption track or transcript is not available yet.
What to do
Wait until processing finishes, then check the CC control and Show transcript again. YouTube states that automatic captions may not be ready at upload time and that ended live streams receive a new VOD caption pass.

The URL or video is no longer available
The link opens a deleted video, an unavailable page, a playlist, a channel, or a different video than expected.
What to do
Open the canonical watch or Shorts URL and confirm that the exact video plays. If the owner removed the video, ask for another authorized source.

Captions are absent but public audio is usable
The video is publicly accessible and contains spoken audio, but YouTube offers no usable caption track.
What to do
Create a new transcript from the audio, then verify names, numbers, punctuation, segment boundaries, and timestamps.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
Treating visible text as a caption track
Burned-in words are image pixels. They can remain visible even when the player has no CC track.
Changing the interface language
A site-language preference does not add a missing source caption track. Inspect the video's actual Subtitles/CC choices.
Submitting a playlist or channel URL
Use the direct watch, youtu.be, or Shorts URL for the individual video you want to process.
Repeatedly retrying a restricted video
A retry does not remove privacy, membership, payment, age, or regional access controls.
Publishing an unreviewed ASR draft
Speech recognition can mishear names, numbers, accents, overlapping speech, and noisy audio. Review against playback.
Assuming a live transcript is final
YouTube states that captions for the ended stream are regenerated through the VOD process and may differ from the live captions.
